Tip 1: Closed Cabinet System
My friends, doors. Doors. Doors.
As you can see in the “before” picture of our living toy storage, we were using a bookcase. The bookcase worked for housing toys and books, but it didn’t hide the mess. When you have a playroom, you might not mind leaving things out, but when your living room serves as the toy storage area, that mess can start to feel overwhelming.
Hiding the mess was my goal. Seeing clutter in my living room was causing me stress, and our family needed a change!

Tip 2: Use Toy Bins
If your goal is to have your child or children pick up their own toys and do it effectively. My tip is to use toy bins within the cabinet. This helps them develop independence while also making cleanup easier.
Have Bins Be Different Colors
This is a tip for the mom who likes organization. (which is me to a tee)
Within using bins for toy storage, make sure each bin is a different color. If you can find bins with a clear front so you can see into them, even better! (You can find the link to my bins here.)
Having different colored bins is the easiest way I have found to create some organization that your kids can follow and maintain on their own (more or less).
Label the Bins
An additional tip is to use labels on the bins. Look for or make labels that show both the name of the items you want to store in the bin and a picture of the items – for your readers and non-readers. (Here is the link to printable labels I used.)
Tip 3: Use Furniture to Your Advantage
This tip depends on the layout of your living room and furniture you have.
We placed our couch in a way that acts as a barrier, creating a designated spot for larger toys that do not fit into the toy storage cabinet. It also provides space for a small play car mat that does not meet the aesthetics of the room as a whole.

With a few simple hacks, such as using closed cabinets to hide the mess, organizing toys into color-coded bins, and cleverly utilizing your existing furniture, you can create a neat and inviting space that works for your family.
