Before and After Home Edition

Before picture of the home decor makeover. You see a small white dresser in a corner of a room with a cluttered top. Two baskets, blue yoto player, and small silver lamp on the top of the dresser. Above the dresser on the wall is shelf with 6 sets of salt and pepper shakers. Above the shelf on the wall is a custom art painting that is green and white.
An after photo of the corner makeover. There is a secretary desk painted a creamy green, with a silver candle stick with a blue candle, two gold picture frames, and a snake plant in a blue pot sitting on top of the desk. Above the desk hanging on the wall is a green painting with a gold picture light centered above it.

Secretary Desk Makeover

The very first step in a home decor makeover is starting with a clean space. I took the tired old dresser out of the space and took the shelf off the wall.

(You can see the dresser makeover in this blog post.)

Home Decor Makeover Tip: Start with a clean space.

Once the space was clean and empty, I took a minute to decide what the space would best be used for. What I needed was a space to house all my electronics, blogging supplies, a few toddler games, and diapers.

Once I decided on the purpose, I realized a secretary desk would be perfect for the space. It would house, organize, and hide everything that needed a home and be a beautiful addition to the little corner of my home.

Home is in the Details

Making your house feel like a home is all about the details you put into it and the people you love.

Your family photos, heirlooms, the colors you choose, and all those small knick-knacks that have meaning to you.

One of my favorite things to add personality to my home is by creating my own artwork (which is easier than you might think! You can find my blog post on another canvas makeover by clicking here.) The artwork above my secretary desk is a piece I made myself, and because I created it, I was able to incorporate the color I painted our fireplace.

When you look at the photo of my little corner of my home you will find the colors of greens, blues, and whites. Those colors are reflected throughout the rest of my house.

Home Decor Makeover Tip: Choose colors for your space that align with the overall color scheme of your home.

Tips for Giving a Space a Makeover

Tip 1: Mix Metals

Mixing your metals will help you achieve a more high design look to your home

For example, you can see that I have both silver and gold in this one corner of my home. I think it adds depth and is more interesting for the eye.

I do recommend not overdoing it with metals, though.  The general rule in mixing metals is to limit yourself to no more than 3 different metals in one  space. But ultimately it is your home, so you do what is pleasing to your eye and your taste.

Tip 2: Add a Plant

In my opinion, greenery is a must in any home! Whether you go for real or faux plants (for both the plant lovers and the plant killers out there!), adding greenery breathes life into a space.

For example, I added a tall, skinny snake plant (her name is Pam, in case you are wondering) to the top of my secretary desk. This not only adds the greenery I wanted but also introduces different dimensions to the space, drawing your eye up instead of focusing in one spot.

Tip 3: Add Mood Lighting

Lighting can truly transform a space and make it feel special.

It can create a bright, airy feel or a soft, moody ambiance.

In this corner of my home, I added a picture light that highlights the artwork that I created for the space and provides soft, mood lighting that matches the overall vibe of my living room. It’s like the room is giving you a warm hug.

Tip 4: Thrift your Decor

I absolutely love thrifting my home decor! I have two reasons for this.

1. It helps me save money. 2. It allows me to find more unique, curated pieces for my home.
