Looking for a DIY to totally change the feel of your space without a huge time commitment?

Want to make a big impact on your existing fireplace tile making it look luxurious, without spending a ton of money?

I’ve got you covered.

Today I am going to tell you how to give your Fireplace tile a makeover on a small budget. (Cause I love saving money! Even wrote a post about tips to save money found here.)

Doing something as simple as changing the tile around your fireplace can have a huge impact on your entire room. Going from the bold modern farmhouse tile to this more traditional tile really helped our room feel more luxurious. I absolutely love how my fireplace turned out and hope I can help you do the same for yourself.

Step 1: Choose your tiles and plan your pattern

Before you start anything, decide what you want. My favorite way to find inspiration is to go on Pinterest. There are lots of different tiles and designs to choose from. I picked a classic checkered pattern. I found the tile at our local Lowes and I linked up above for you.

Before I went out and bought what I needed I took some printer paper and cut them to the size of the tile to make sure I liked them and to make sure I knew how many I would need. I am a very visual person, so it helped me feel confident in my design choice before spending money on it. Below you will see a picture of my beautiful paper tiles on our existing tile.

Step 2: Clean the original tiles

Prepare the space by cleaning your existing tiles. Make sure to take the time to clean very well. Start by vacuuming, spraying them with a good cleaning product, and wiping them down.

Finally, wait for the existing tile to completely dry of the cleaner before moving on to the next step.

Step 3:Start laying out your titles

Once you feel secure with your decision buy your tiles and start laying them out where you plan to place them. This will help you guarantee that you have enough, and that you like the look, and show you how many cuts you will need to make to make them all fit well.

Step 4: Cutting the titles to be placed properly

Now that you have finalized where the tiles are going you can start cutting your tile. Since this is a peel-and-stick tile we are working on, it is a pretty simple process. Since it is not a real tile, it will not make a huge mess and is pretty easy to cut.

Use an exacto knife to cut the tile. I cut the tile on my kitchen table and put cardboard between the table and the tile to make a safe cutting surface.

To know where to make a cut I used two different methods on this project. The first was the proper way, using a tape measure to measure out where the cut needed to be. The other method was a not-so-proper way, but it worked for me. I literally laid the title down with the paper still on the back so as not to permanently place it down and marked with a pen where the cut was needed.

Step 5: Peel off the paper and start placing them down

This next step I actually did at the same time as step 4. As you are placing your tile down, when you are sure it is where it needs to be placed take the back paper off to reveal the sticky adhesive and lay the tile down permanently.

Step 6: Press them all down firmly

Once you have laid out all your tiles make sure to press them all down firmly. You want to make sure all the tiles are firmly down, so they do not move. The last thing you want is for all the hard work of putting them down and they start to move all over the place.

Step 7: Enjoy your handy work

Step back and look at your handy work! You just accomplished this project all on your own and it looks good!
