Lighting to Customize Your Home

Use lighting to customize your home!

Lighting is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to add character and personality to your home. Whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, a few thoughtful lighting changes can make a big difference.

If you’re comfortable with basic electrical work, installing your own light fixtures is a great way to customize your space. If not, no worries, ask for help or consider hiring a professional.

In both of the homes we have owned, updating the lighting was one of the first things we did and we have never regretted it! It immediately made the space feel more like “us”.

Builder Grade to Custom Light Fixtures

Swapping out builder-grade lighting for something more your style adds instant charm and personality.

Homeowner or Renter Can Use Lighting to Customize Their Home

The tip of using lighting to customize your home can be for both homeowners and renters!

If you’re renting and feel confident, you can easily swap out light fixtures; just be sure to:

  • Store the original fixtures in a safe spot
  • Label each one so you know where it goes
  • Reinstall them before you move out

Even if you are renting it still could be a good investment in your home. You can take your upgraded fixtures with you to your next home. It’s an investment that moves with you!

The Cost of Lighting

Lighting can be pricey, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are my favorite budget-friendly sources:

1. Amazon

There are lots of different lighting options on Amazon to choose from with lots of different price options to meet your needs. Keep reading and I will show you examples of quality lighting we have used in our home.

2. Facebook MarketPlace.

Before I buy anything I always check out Facebook MarketPlace first. You would be surprised at how many amazing finds are out there for a fraction of retail prices.

3. Thrift Stores.

Never underestimate a thrift store run! You never know what gems you’ll discover—especially with a little imagination or DIY.

Examples of Where to Update Your Lighting Fixtures

You can update your house’s lighting anywhere you see fit and to suit your own taste. Here are a few examples of places we have updated our lighting to customize our home.

Hallway Lighting

Similar to the lights we used in our entryway hallway are linked here.

Kitchen Lighting

We found these lights at Ikea in 2019 when we moved into our home and the light above our table on Facebook MarketPlace for an excellent price.

Celling Lighting

If able to add can lighting your room for added light dimension.

Because of cost and time we have not added any can lighting to our home, so do not feel like it is a need.

What we need and would say is a good way to update your home is to update all your cookie cutter ceiling lighting (such as those “boob” ceiling lights).

You will see in the picture above how we changed out the ordinary ceiling lighting with a more unique and elegant ceiling light fixture. (A link to the celling light we used in our front room can be found here.)

Bathroom Lighting

We found this bathroom room at the thrift store. Like I said you never know what you can find at the thrift store.

Set the Mood with Lighting

Wall Lighting

Add ambiance with wall sconces! They’re a beautiful way to layer lighting and create a cozy atmosphere. There are so many options—from candle sconces to hardwired or battery-operated ones.

You can find my blog post on how I did a makeover in a corner of my home using the picture light here.

Lamp, Lamps, Lamps

Picture of a lamp sitting on a table.

Never underestimate the power of a good lamp. Whether it’s on a table, a shelf, or the floor. Lamps are versatile and add warmth.

My goal is to not need to use any ceiling light at night to give a warm atmosphere. So I set lamps accordingly (such as in most corners of our home you will find a lamp).

A Sea of Candles

A picture of three candles sitting a stack of books.

Candles add that extra warming touch that make your space feel intimate and homey.

They are always a must when we gather people in our home after sundown.

I prefer flameless candles for more of a piece of mind for fire safety (especially with a two year old running around). You can find the link to the flameless candles I like to use here.

Lighting to Customize Your Home

No matter your budget, style, or living situation, lighting is such a powerful way to make your space feel more like you

From swapping out a builder-grade fixture to adding cozy layers with lamps and sconces, each change; big or small, adds personality and warmth. So don’t be afraid to get creative and start experimenting.

Whether you’re thrifting for the perfect find or investing in a timeless piece, the right lighting can truly transform your home into a space that feels custom, welcoming, and totally your own.
