Fun Birthday Traditions for Kids
Are you looking for some special and fun birthday traditions for kids to start this year for your family?
If you are, look no further! Here are 11 of some of the best birthday traditions for kids that your child will remember forever!
As parents we all want our children to have special childhoods that they can look back on and think to themselves about how great it was. Yearly birthday traditions for kids are definitely one way to accomplish that.
One of my own missions as a parent is to make my child’s birthday as special as possible, but also add some simplicity to it as well. The list I have created I believe creates just that.
Your child will feel special on their day, but it will also create a simple and cute day for them.
These are yearly birthday traditions for kids you can start from their very first year, or any year you want to start!

List of Birthday Traditions for Kids
1. Birthday Morning Surprise
Create a birthday morning surprise for your child on their birthday.
We will hang streamers on their door to start out the surprise. I have also seen people tape balloons to their door, so when they open it in the morning they will have an avalanche of balloons fall on them when they leave the room.
Have their birthday present sitting out for them in the morning if possible.
Hang streamers and balloons from the ceiling in the main area of your home.
2. Special Breakfast
Cook them a special breakfast of foods you know they would love to eat in the morning.
Color dye the pancakes their favorite color.
Go out for donuts! (That is what we normally do!)
3. Birthday Countdown
Have a birthday countdown a month or a week going on for them.
Make them excited for their upcoming birthday!
4. Print Out Pictures From Within Their Last Year
Print out pictures of them from the past year!
Hang them from a string across your fireplace, a wall, or your kitchen island. (My sister in law does this for her kids each year and they LOVE it!)
Take an easier approach (like me) and make an album on your phone and stream it to your TV.
5. Birthday Hat
Make or buy them a special birthday hat for them to wear for the day.
You can make or buy one hat to use as a family every year or you could use a new one each year. Whatever works for your family is better.
6. Bake a Birthday Cake Together
Baking their birthday cake (or whatever dessert you like to eat) together can make such fun memories!
Making a bit of a mess together in the kitchen is always fun!
7. Go to their Favorite Restaurant or Cook Their Favorite Food for Dinner
Let your child pick dinner for the family that night.
You can either make dinner at home or go out to their favorite restaurant for dinner. Whatever works best for your family your child will love!
8. Write a Letter for Him or Her
Each year on your child’s birthday write them a letter as a birthday tradition for kids.. Then when he or she turns 18 you give them your stack of letters to them for their 18th birthday.
It will be so fun to look back on what you wrote each year and cherish the sweet moments of the past years.
9. Birthday Interview
Each year on your child’s birthday at dinner give your child a birthday interview. Have specific questions to ask them each year.
You can just ask freestyle questions at dinner, you can write down their answers, or you could even use your phone to make a voice recording of the birthday interview.
Some example questions you can ask your child each year are (depending on your child’s age):
How old are you today?
What is your favorite color?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
What is your favorite song?
What is the best thing about being (age)?
What have you learned this year?
What is your favorite memory of the past year?
What are you most looking forward to this next year?
10. Family Photo
Each year take a family photo on your child’s birthday.
It is simple and easy to do and you will thank yourself later when you want to look back at photos from your child’s childhood.
11. Birthday Book
Create a birthday book for your child, by making a scrapbook for them.
You can go as simple or crazy as you want with a scrapbook.
Designate a page or two for your child each year. You can add the letter, the answers to the birthday interview, the family photo to this book, their birthday party theme, and whatever else feels important to include in the book.
When your child turns 18 you give them the book to look back at and have fun looking at all the memories.
